Creating KNITTING!
Cocoon&me were approached by Plunge Creations an award-winning Costume & Prop company to help them create 'KNITTING', one of the costumes in this season's The Masked Singer for ITV.
We were given the design & asked to suggest a suitable yarn for the costume & how to make the Jumbo Jumper. Paula immediately knew that the best way to achieve the oversized scale would be to knit using her ARMS as needles, as she teaches in her popular Arm Knit Blanket Workshops.
Plunge then started work on a basic frame made from spongey foam for the jumper to cover. Paula then joined them at their studio & set about writing a fully fashioned pattern for the Jumper, using her skills learnt when she was a knitwear designer.
The body & sleeves were Arm Knitted in 4 pieces, ensuring the blue stripe matched across the body & arms, & then she sewed it together using the same jumbo yarn.
The design was finished off by crocheting Mittens to cover the hands, using an oversized crochet hook.
The rest of the costume was left to Plunge to finish.
The head was a moulded sphere created from veraform & covered by the same yarn to make it look like a ball of wool. Two pairs of knitting needles were also moulded, & the final touch was to create foam leggings with shoes attached to also resemble Knitting Needles!
'KNITTING' opened the show on 1st January & immediately everyone was talking about who was behind the mask! Claire Richards from Steps was finally unmasked as the singer, as more & more people recognised her singing!
Since the show Paula & Claire have been in touch & Paula has made Claire a large Arm Knitted blanket in the same colours as 'KNITTING'!
